Wemindji Turns 50!
July 2009
It's hard to believe the town of Wemindji has hit the half-century mark. The North West Company believes in the success of our Northern communities so we jumped in to help the community celebrate their birthday! The celebration included a community feast and a spectacular 40-minute fireworks display, followed by several days of community activities. Representatives of NWC attended the feast (Brent Bowen and Jim Baxter), and sat at a place of honor with a family celebrating a walking out of their youngest member. After the feast, was an opening ceremony with about 2500 people in attendance. The celebration organizers took significant time to relay to the crowd the commitment made by The North West Company to the community of Wemindji, going so far as to announce all of our donations. Of particular note, we were credited with donating the fireworks for the opening night! The attendees and, most importantly, the citizens of Wemindji were incredibly appreciative of our involvement and the Chief himself complimented our efforts to help the community celebrate. Brent Bowen, District Manager Eastern 1, wishes to send his gratitude out to all of those who made NWC's contribution and attendance possible.
